Friday night, I got all dressed up like an Easter egg in a frilly Banana Republic skirt and spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get my hair flat. Steve and I had a date in the city.
He surprised me with tickets for La Cage Aux Folles. How excellent. And just five days after the Tonys. I'm a sucker for musical theater.
La Cage doesn't have the huge hit song that everyone remembers, and the plot has become tired with the Robin Williams movie on TV every other week. But it's still a fabulous show because of the chorus of trannies high kicking and mincing in sequins and heels. The outfits, the choreography, and the staging made this play worth seeing.
The actor who played Albin had an outstanding voice and wore the girdle well. He looked better than any of the tour bus biddies sitting in the row next to us.
I was overdressed for the theater, because Steve had kept our evening plans a secret until the last minute. The night before, he had instructed me to look good, so I was much fancier than others in the row. Nobody bothers to look fine at the theater anymore. Someone down the row from us was wearing denim shorts. Moron.
Leaving the show, I was glad that I had spent all that time getting fabulous. It sucks to look to less fine than a man in a dress.
Times Square was packed. Wall to wall people at 11:00 at night. When I drove into the city earlier, it was clear sailing until 69th Street and then it took me an hour to go 10 blocks. I had to abandon the car in a lot at 54th Street and walk the rest of the way to Steve's office. I can't believe that Bloomberg still has hopes of putting in the stadium. Hosting the Olympics is asinine. There is no more room for another soul on that island.
I agree that no one dresses up anymore to go to the theatre.
It's a shame really. To this day, I still dress up whenever we go to the theatre. It's part of the experience.
It annoys me to see cut off shorts and flip flops during intermission.

Somewhat related point: my foreman at work was talking about a stag and doe party (sort of a respectable bachelor and bachelorette party) that he'd been to on Friday. It was held at a nice banquet hall. He complained that his wife had nagged him out of wearing shorts and sport sandals. I was like ...what decent person would wear shorts to such an event? His response: that's what the groom AND the bride wore to it. Shorts and sandals. Lame.
