Sort of stale, but here's another article on how blogs act as media watchdogs. Jay Rosen is in there.

Ferber is falling out of favor and more people are making room in their bed for baby. We went through two months of hell as our 3 year old suddenly was unable to sleep without the warm body of a grown up. We tried all sorts of nice, half way measures to ease him out of the bad habit. The only thing that worked was making him cry for three days and we're magically back to getting a full night of sleep again. We put him into bed by himself at 7:45, and we don't see him for 12 hours later. Ferber works. Yeah, we might have fucked up his fragile psyche, but you know what? I don't care.

That Brooks piece is getting ripped apart by Echidne and Pandagon. I am burnt out on the topic, but I just want to add that the enemy of my enemy is still my enemy. Brooks is way off base when he says the silver bullet solution to all domestic problems is family values. If we suck the funding out of our schools, but just have a loving mommy and daddy at home, then all will be well. Uh, no. So Brooks is off base, but Hirshman is still an idiot.

That whole Ferber thing completely passed us by, thank goodness. But neither have we ever brought any of our children into bed to sleep with us. We rock them back to sleep in an easy chair, we take them for drives, we do any number of things to get them to nod back off--we just don't bring them to bed with us. Why? No principled reason; we've just never liked it. (It's our bed, dammit.) So when they cry, we've let them cry for a while, and then we've gotten up and done something about it. Kind of ad hoc, but we've survived.

We had, I think, 16 people over for a late New Year's party yesterday. All went well, with plenty of food left over. Hopefully that's an omen for a good new year.

Dr. Sears, the unbelievably smug advocate for co-sleeping is now doing product endorsements for Kashi Mighty Bites. We like Mighty Bites well enough, but I do think Dr. Sears has descended to his level.

I am so glad that I'm not the only one who found Ferber's advice to be great and has no regrets about the whole not co-sleeping thing. Seriously, Ferber saved my sanity when I had a nearly year-old child who only slept in my arms, in her car seat or if she fell asleep in her crib and I didn't make a single noise as I tried to slip out of the room and hallway of too many squeaks.
