Another Damned Medievalist

Well, if it helps, the Colt 45 and Jack Daniels (and the kids who can't tell land from water) are all over the place at SLAC -- OTOH, it is the most diverse campus I've ever taught at, including three urban community colleges. It helps that our admission policies look at a lot of factors in addition to academics.

I'll have a serious comment later--but a silly one for now. I'm pretty sure you've never bartended. Jack Daniels is top-shelf (or at least premium) liquor; the better quastion would be, where's the Early Times?

Laura

Damn. I actually asked my husband what went along with Colt 45 and he said Jack Daniels. I had proposed Jim Beam, but he said that was good stuff. What's another low rent booze? Night Train? Or is that too homeless man? Probably shouldn't have pushed that metaphor as far as I did, but I was feeling colorful last night.

I just disagree with the overall assumption that, as long as the truly 'gifted' get equal opportunity, it's OK to stick the 'non-gifted' people with a crappy education. The problem in the US, IMHO, is that we have accepted low overall standards as long as we give the few (hmm, could it be the few worth saving?) an escape valve. I'm supposed to feel better because the escape valve now checks for skin color *and* economic background? Not so much. This whole concept of a meritocracy accepts a ruling class, but somehow implies that it's OK as long as you're selected for the ruling class based on performance.

EVERYONE needs a solid education. This is a democracy, people -- if the populace is not educated, the nation will lose its ability to govern itself well. (One could argue this has already happened.) Instead of arguing about slicing the pie we need to make the pie bigger.

It's never, ever a good idea to ask where the Early Times is, lest someone tell you. That's some seriously vile stuff. I bought a bottle in grad school once when I was too broke to spring for Maker's. I took one sip and poured out the rest. I should have thrown the whole bottle away at that point, but my momma didn't raise me to throw away good liquor. So I decided to make bourbon gravy. As soon as the Early Times hit the hot pan, I was overwhelmed by the stench of vanilla and burning plastic. I had to leave the room until the fumes died down.

Southbern Comfort?

Laura

heh. Now I'm endlessly curious about this Early Times stuff. Gotta try it.

Perhaps Affirmative Action was more significant a generation ago, when it helped a group of black and minorities reach middle class status. Their children, beneficiaries of all the advantages of middle class, are now part of the minority cocktail in the university. But now that we have a big enough group in the universities and the suburbs, diversity programs don’t help move more minorities to the posh suburbs.

Not even. A recent look at AA at Harvard showed that about 2/3 of the "African American" AA recipient were West Indian or African immigrants, their children, or biracial.

As immigration from Africa has increased since 1990 (30% of black people in NYC were not born in the United States), race not only becomes a poor proxy for economic status -- it becomes a poor proxy for race!

Personally, I don't think you should mix firearms and booze.
