Weekend Journal

The first semester as a university is always difficult. You have to find the bathrooms, get your parking pass, make nice with the office secretary. Not to mention assembling lectures and paper assignments. Since the week is mostly devoted to giving the lectures, my weekends have been consumed with writing the bloody things.

For the first few weeks, I worked at my office at the college. It was quiet, but too quiet. I missed the kids too much. So, this weekend, I sat in my home office and wrote with a million of little distractions in the background. I've been in front of the computer for nearly 12 hours today and 12 hours yesterday. Still, lecture writing, unlike other kinds of writing, is very compatible with requests to help with an art project and the sounds of a video game on Steve's PC.

Between the lecture writing, slight sore throats, and the frigid cold, the whole family was house bound. We're all getting used to the new life. Before the semester started, we had a lot more adventures outside the home. We would shoot into Manhattan for Chinese food or spend an afternoon at the mall. Now, it's all home. In some ways, it's good. The kids have had to learn to entertain themselves, and we've all had to used to sitting still.

At 7:00am, the plastic electric trains were dumped loudly on the rug. After Jonah sounded the alarm, we dashed out of bed because Ian had filled the flatcars with soap and water. Later, Ian emerged from the bathroom covered in cartoon bandaids. Jonah pestered us for video game time. He wanted to know why the Mack the Truck from Cars was the same voice as the pig from Toy Story 2. This led to a new game: 6 degrees from John Ratzenberger.

I wrote and scanned. Multiple copyrights were infringed. Powerpoint presentations were created. Let's see if I can figure out the projector on Tuesday.

That is the best part of Cars. The bit in the credits where Mack is watching all the other Pixar movies and waxing lyrical about the quality of the acting from John Ratzenburger.
