Dumb new word of the day, "Funemployed."
I am completely obsessed with buying a house in upstate New York. I'll have to write about my obsession soon, which predates these two articles from the Times.
Loved Gawker's snarky response to the New York Times article on Agyness Deyn.

LOL, no you don't. My aunt and uncle live in Brooklyn and have a house upstate. Not nearly as cool as you'd think.

There was a big article in our free weekly about out-of-towners buying Pittsburgh houses sight-unseen and then trying to rent or re-sell them. The gist was: 1) yes, you can buy a house for less than a used car and 2) this is probably not a good idea and 3) you can deduce #2 from #1 if you'd think about it for a bit.

As for my 2nd home, I want 40 acres in the mountains and a yurt.

Mongolia's got lots of acres. And lots of yurts. The commute's a bitch, though.

I was thinking of the much more conviently located mountains that start about a hour outside Pittsburgh. Though 40 acres is probably more than I'll ever be able to afford if I want to be close to a decent road.

Laura, I'm at Bard College this week for a workshop, and believe me, walking around little towns like Rhinebeck, I've fantasized about a weekend home here, and I don't even live within a weekend's distance from her!

It's really bad. I've been reading real estate listings. Not that we can afford it or anything sane like that.

You can get a pretty tricked-out yurt for less than $10k, plus the platform.

I'd forgotten about wanting plumbing and electricity. A trailer would probably be cheaper than a yurt.

Cabin in the Ozarks; that's my ideal summer/weekend home. Someplace near Bull Shoals, perhaps. Head up there on long fall weekends, enjoy the foliage and fishing. Yes, and someday we'll pay off our credit card, and the moon will turn to cheese.

one word- Kinderhook. (Or Chatham, or Stuyvesant). It's a great place to live (even part time).
