Speaking of news on the TV, I just saw that the guy (allegedly) blackmailing Letterman was Robett Halderman, a CBS news producer. If that's what the people who make relatively serious shows like 48 Hours get up to in their off time....

Wendy

This may seem offtrack, but did you ever watch Siskel and Ebert which became Ebert and Roeper, then Roeper and whomever he could grab for a guest stint and which now is a show called At the Movies, with AO Scott and Michael Phillips. My husband and I LOVE the new version, mainly because Scott and Phillips aren't trying to one-up each other, just talk about movies and why they are and aren't worth watching, and they talk intelligently and without talking down to the audience.

Sometimes I think the Siskel and Ebert "thumps up/thumbs down" stuff was the starting point. So it's interesting to see Scott and Phillips having civil, interesting discussions.

I do think we have GOT to get away from this either-or thinking. Either you're with us, or against us. Either you're a red stater or blue stater. Either you're an average American or a snooty elite.

We need to teach more Rogerian argument. I also think our students crave it.

MH

On the one hand Rogerian argument sounds nice. Same with the 'Deliberative' stuff from Fishkin. However, I can't shake the feeling (based on a great deal of past experience) that most people who seek consensus mean "We keep talking until everybody agrees with me."

Wendy

Yeah, consensus has never worked for me. ;) So I keep talking....

I also think Rogerian argument is boring. The students want to build consensus, but it's a lot of work. We need to figure out ways of teaching it more effectively. Or I do, since it's under the purview of one of my courses. ;)

Clearly, we're a Dunkin Donuts family.

Usually, when a comment doesn't make sense to me, it's because I've written it.
