I have never experienced any emotion while watching a Congressional hearing other than disgust and contempt for the senators and congressmen involved. It really makes me froth to see those pits of scum blathering on about things they know nothing about. If I could watch each of those sanctimonious pustules die slowly in excruciating pain . . . .

Actually, I rarely watch hearings, because I think being consumed with disgust and contempt for other human beings is spiritually unhealthy. For the same reason, I try not to think about government or politics too often.

y81,

So, from the horse's mouth, what's wrong with the hearings? I haven't been watching, but I'm assuming that the congress critters aren't smart enough or informed enough to understand the answers to the questions they're asking.

Soon, defenestration will be a moderate position.

bj

And, what form of government would you all prefer?

Would watching the civil trial be more interesting? And, has there ever been a conviction in a well publicized televised trial?

MH

Anyway, as effective as it often is, I don't think "Look, Congress sucks worse than us," will work for Goldman Sachs executives at any point in the next couple of years.

Wikipedia says: The Scorpion and the Frog is a fable of unknown author, though often mis-attributed to Aesop.[1] The story is about a scorpion asking a frog to carry him across a river. The frog is afraid of being stung, but the scorpion reassures him that if it stung the frog, the frog would sink and the scorpion would drown as well. The frog then agrees; nevertheless, in mid-river, the scorpion stings him, dooming the two of them. When asked why, the scorpion explains, "I'm a scorpion; it's my nature."

so... "I'm from Goldman, it's my nature" - and we have agreed to carry them across the river. More fool us.

Defenestration is one of my favorite words. Points for its usage in the comment section.

Yes, the senate committee was pandering and grandstanding. Absolutely. This was more about politics than justice. There is absolutely no evidence that Wall Street's shady deals were the sole cause of our economic shit hole. Blame can be placed everywhere from greedy home flippers to greedy real estate agents to greedy Wall Street investors who don't understand that buying stocks is no different that gambling. There are no guarantees when you buy stocks. The economic shit hole is also the cause of all sorts of macro-level changes in the economy.

At the same time, those Goldman guys showed little remorse. They played the part of villains impeccably. I'm pissed off at them, too. Steve has left the house at 5am every day for the past month, because he has to put in 14 hour days cleaning up their mess.

Amy P: I didn't watch these hearings, but I believe Megan McArdle has covered them well. It's the usual stuff of politicians blathering on about topics they don't understand.

bj: A more limited one, I guess, because the less the government does, the less it makes me angry, and anger is spiritually unhealthy. (Indeed, it's one of the seven deadly sins.)

MH

In general, that's true. But, far worse is when the government limits the downside for somebody and they complain about limits on the upside.
